Trinidad & Tobago v Paraguay
20th June - Kaiserslautern: Att. 46,000?
Trinidad & Tobago 0-2
Paraguay
Trinidad & Tobago: Jack, A.John (Jones 31), Sancho, Lawrence, Birchall, Whitley (Latapy 66), Edwards, Theobald, Glen (Wise 41), S.John, Yorke.
Paraguay: Bobadilla, Nunez, Gamarra, Caceres (Mansuri 78), Caniza (Da Silva 88), Barreto, Acuna, Paredes, Dos Santos, Santa Cruz, Valdez (Cuevas 66).
T&T could still qualify if they won and Sweden lost and they had a far more attacking looking line up to start this game.
It was a dubious tactic, however, and they allowed Paraguay far more room to play than they had either Sweden or England.
Santa Cruz almost made them pay early on but Jack saved smartly to keeph his side level. The big goalkeeper would have a busy night.
T&T were getting sights of goal themselves, however, and Whitley was not far away with a firm volley from the edge of the area. They were also getting plenty of set piece opportunities but their threat from these was minimal.
Jack almost blotted his copybook by misjudging a ball on the edge of his area but he was bailed out by his defence but shortly afterwards he was actually beaten by a bit of "friendly fire".
Acuna sent in a free kick which Dos Santos flicked on and Sancho buried a comprehensive header past his own keeper.
T&T went even more gung ho by then replacing a defender with another attacker but the move simply gave Paraguay even more time and space to build their attacks.
Jack had to make another smart save at his near post to deny Valdez and then it looked as though Caniza had increased the lead by squeezing his shot through Jack from the angle.
The linesman put up his flag remarkably late to rule out the effort but, despite the delay, it was at least the correct decision.
T&T suffered a blow when the lively looking Glen had to be carried off and they continued to be pressed back.
Santa Cruz saw his shot flash just wide and Theobald had to clear an effort from Paredes off the line as Paraguay ended the half in total control.
Half Time: T&T 0 Paraguay 1
T&T made a more spirited opening to the second half and almost scored from their best move of the game. Jones made a quality burst into opposition territory before feeding Edwards on the right. His low cross arrowed across the bow with Stern John just unable to connect.
Edwards put in another dangerous ball shortly afterwards but Gamarra made a timely interception to cut out the danger.
Paraguay remained the more likely looking scorers, however, as they broke with menace. Caniza led one charge and fed Paredes who forced Jack into yet another decent stop.
Bobadilla almost gifted T&T an equaliser when he got underneath a deep centre but Wise could only hit the side netting from beyond the far post.
T&T were becoming increasingly hopeful with their long range efforts and Birchall, Yorke and Latapy all chanced their arms without troubling Bobadilla.
With just over five minutes remaining Paraguay sealed victory when Cuevas worked a neat one two with Santa Cruz and scored with aplomb.
T&T had given their all but it had not been enough to get them a goal. Paraguay were left to reflect on the last minute goal by Sweden that had ultimately cost them.
Full Time: Trinidad & Tobago 0 Paraguay 2
T&T: Jack 8, A.John 4 (Jones 7), Sancho 5, Lawrence 6, Birchall 5, Whitley 6 (Latapy 7), Edwards 8, Theobald 4, Glen 5 (Wise 5), S.John 5, Yorke 5.
Paraguay: Bobadilla 6, Nunez 4, Gamarra 6, Caceres 7 (Mansuri 4), Caniza 7, Barreto 7, Acuna 7, Paredes 5, Dos Santos 6, Santa Cruz 7, Valdez 6 (Cuevas 8).
Referee: R.Rosetti (Italy) 7.
Not a difficult game to handle and generally showed commonsense.
Good:
The attitude of T&T. They had no real quality but gave it their best shot and were as positive as their limitations would allow.
Bad:
As I said, they did lack quality.
Ugly:
The injury to Cornell Glen did not look nice.
