Match Report: The Swiss were made favourites for this game following their opening draw with France, and were keen to secure the three points that would go a long way to getting them into the knockout stage of Germany 2006. Togo knew they mustn't lose after their opening defeat to Korea.
The opening minutes of this game were as open as as any other played so far in this years tournament. Both team seemed set on attacking and opening the scoring first.
Kader almost got on the end of a Adebayor flick in the first minute, but Swiss keeper Zuberbuhler was alert enough to deny him. Then Cabanas tested Agassa in the Togo goal with a thirty yard drive. Agassa would be in for a busy afternoon.
Cabanas again got involved down the right and produced a wicked cross that evaded all the Togo defenders and gave Frei a good heading opportunity at the back post, but again Agassa was well positioned.
Then Adebayor once again caused the Swiss problems. A strong run and cross from the left by him was only partially cleared by the Swiss, and when the ball was returned from the opposite flank Adebayor seemed to be held in the box. A good shout for a penalty, but the referee was not having any of it.
A good end to end start to the game, which was still less than ten minutes old.
The breakthrough was not far away. Magnin produced his first telling surge down the left from full back and produced a fine deep cross past the back post where Barnetta was unmarked. Barnetta's first time side foot volley was arrowed straight back across goal to the waiting Frei who tapped the ball in with no problem. A great move.
Most of the action in the rest of this half surrrounded Togo's attempts to get the equaliser, with Switzerland limited to break away attacks, that troubled the flat back four of Togo.
Dossevi had a great chance to level for Togo on the half hour when he arrived late at the back post to shoot wide. He should have scored, or at least hit the target.
Then the busy Adebayor had another penalty shout. Another powerful run took him into the box and past Mueller, who trailed a leg behing himself in a vain attempt to curtail Adebayor's run. The Togo striker caught his leg and went down. It looked for all the World a penalty, but again the referee decided not to give it. The first one was 50-50, this one looked definite.
A minute later Mueller was again involved, this time producing a superb saving tackle on Kader, who looked set to score.
The Swiss weathered the storm from Togo and seemed happy to go in at the break 1-0 up. The Togo side seemed to be a little hard done to, and you wondered whether they would let the events get to them.
Half Time: Togo 0 Switzerland 1
Switzerland came back out for the second half in determined mood and presed hard from the start to seal a win.
A quality passing movement involving four Swiss players gave Barnetta a good shooting opportunity from a central position about 20 yards out that Agassa tipped over with great agility.
Yakin on as a Swiss substitute produced a curling shot with the outside of his left foot, which had Agassa worried as he scrambled across, and then Frei got a shot away from close range which was blocked by a lunging Togo defender.
Yakin then found a great opening from Frei's lay off and should have buried his chance, but again Agassa came to the rescue with a wonderful save. From the resulting corner Agassa made a great take under real pressure from Frei.
All the chances seemed to be coming Switzerland's way, with Togo not able to penetrate the solid Swiss back four. Salifou in midfield produced one or two surging runs and long range efforts, and Adebayor still remained a handful, but the Swiss were rarely in serious trouble.
Agassa was almost caught out with about ten minutes remaining when Frei spotted him off his line and tried to belt the ball over him from almost the half way line. Agassa was clearly worried as he backtracked towards goal, but the effort landed on the top of the net.
Switzerland put the game beyond doubt with a couple of minutes remaining when Barnetta scored a fine goal. Lustrinelli held up the ball on the Swiss left and squared the ball across the full width of the box to Barnetta who never broke his stride and lashed the ball low across Agassa and in off the post. Very reminiscent of Carlos Alberto's strike for Brazil in 1970, without the 5 minutes of build up play.
One late strike for Togo again from Salifou was tipped over by Zuberbuhler, but Switzerland ran out comfortable winners. It may have been different if the referee had maken the right call on the second penalty shout.
Full Time: Togo 0 Switzerland 2
Togo Ratings: Agassa 8, Nibombe 5, Tchangai 6, Agboh 5 (Salifou 6), Toure 5, Dossevi 6 (Senaya 6), Mamam 5(Malm 5), Romao 5, Forson 5, Kader 6, Adebayor 7
Switzerland Ratings: Zuberbuhler 6, Degen 5, Magnin 6, Mueller 7, Senderos 6, Barnetta 7, Vogel 6, Cabanas 6 (Streller 5), Wicky 4, Gygax 4(Yakin 6), Frei 7 (Lustrinelli 6)
Referee: C.Amarilla(Paraguay) 3. Made a massive mistake on the penalty which really cost Togo dear in this game. Refereed the game well other than that mistake, but that is no consolation to the Togo boys on their early flight home, is it?
Good: Agassa, the Togo keeper. African keepers have not been the best in recent tournaments. This guy looks like a good un on todays performance.
Bad: Good game, spoiled by a refereeing mistake.
Ugly: The mad looking Togo fan in the crowd who'd painted himself green with coloured spots on. You wouldn't want to be bumping into him later in a dark alley in Dortmund.
