Sheffield United 2007-08 Season
9th in the Championship
League Cup: 4th round, Arsenal h.0-3
FA Cup: 5th round replay, Middlesbrough a. 0-1 aet.
Highlight:
2-1 home win against Manchester City in the FA Cup 4th round, 27/1/08
Low Spot:
0-2 home defeat to Charlton Athletic, 1/3/08
Good:
James Beattie
Dropping down into The Championship gave Beattie a new lease of life and he scored consistently all season. Hit 22 league goals while the next highest total for the club was four.
Matthew Kilgallon
Defender who really grew in stature as the season went on and had established himself as the first choice centre half by the end of the campaign.
Bad:
Luton Shelton
The worst of United‘s mis-firing forwards.
Lee Hendrie
A lot was expected of the former England midfielder but he was quickly out of favour at Bramall Lane and ended up farmed out on loan.
In Brief:
This was a hugely disappointing season after relegation from the Premier League. After a sorry start The Blades won four out of five in late November, early December but then managed to win just two more from the next sixteen. This meant that relegation was still a possibility as late as the middle of March.
The club then rallied to win eight out of the last eleven for a final position of 9th.
There was little consistency in team selection and this will need to be sorted out if next season is to bring the expected promotion bid. There is little doubt that the club has the basis of a promotion winning squad although a reliable partner for James Beattie will need to emerge.
