Premier League Review - Wk 6 : Sept 27/28th - 2008
You are here: Football England > Premier League > Week 6: 2008-9 Season John Carew, Is it True? Headline of the week this week has got to be Hull City's fantastic away win at Arsenal. Celebrations must surely still be going off the Richter Scale as I write this. Arsenal paid for some profligacy in front of goal in the first half, but nothing can detract from the way that Hull came from behind to pip the mighty Arsenal. All the goals came in the second half, and when Hull's Paul McShane put through his own net trying to sweep away a cross under pressure, the result looked a formality for Arsenal. Phil Brown's men had other ideas, and a superb strike from Brazilian ace Giovanni (surely Man City have got rid of the wrong Brazilian) soon had them level. The Brazilian cut in from the left and sent a 25 yard screamer flying past the flailing Almunia in Arsenal's goal. A well worked set piece 5 minutes later allowed Daniel Cousin to slant a header home and put Hull in front, with still 25 minutes remaining, and although Arsenal pressed, the Hull resistance was strong. Use the force wisely Phil. A tetchy Merseyside Derby at Goodison was settled by two fine finishes from the boot of Spanish maestro, Fernando Torres to leave Liverpool 2-0 winners. The match was not pretty to watch, not least due to the terribly defeatist formation employed by David Moyes, who left Yakubu hopelessly isolated up front on his own, hoping to create something from a tightly packed midfield.
Everton fans were not too pleased with this showing, and were even less pleased with the unfeasible sending off of Tim Cahill for little more than a clumsy collision with Alonso. Aston Villa reached the heady heights of third position this week, again thanks largely to John Carew, who is fast becoming Les Ferdinand in disguise. Watch out Danni Behr. The Big Norwegian again provided the clinching goal as Villa beat Sunderland 2-1 at Villa Park. Djibril Cisse had put Sunderland ahead after just 9 minutes, but a swift riposte, first by Ashley Young from a well taken free kick and then Carew finishing a cross from another set piece, sealed all three points & third place for Aston Villa. Surely it's now time for the Villa faithful to come up with a decent song for big John Carew? I propose something to the tune of T.Rex's "Metal Guru". Man City proved that they really are Man City after last weeks tremendous thrashing of Portsmouth 6-0. This week they lost dismally to a sturdy Wigan Athletic, who never looked troubled by the big money men from up't road. Antonio Valencia lashed home a spectacular drive for Wigan's first and Amr Zaki provided the winner from the spot after Vincent Kompany had equalised for City in between. Wigan fans will no doubt be delighted by the excellent partnership being formed up front between Heskey & Zaki. Tottenham proved that they are really struggling this year, by going down 2-0 away at Portsmouth and the Spurs fans will no doubt be depressed by Defoe getting the second from the spot. As if it wasn't bad enough that Crouch scored the first one? West Ham continued their recent good form with a sortie across London to win 2-1 away at Fulham. Fulham's demise was more than partly down to Andy Johnson's sending off for two yellows, which could easily have been two reds, the challenges were so poor. Goals from Carlton Cole & Matthew Etherington saw the Hammers home. Man Utd enjoyed a trouble free afternoon at home to Bolton, winning 2-0 in comfortable style, after being awarded the most ridiculous penalty in the memory of man when Ronaldo tumbled in the box after a sound tackle from J Lloyd Samuel. Ronaldo stepped up to dispatch the spot kick and Rooney wrapped up the points and capped a fine personal performance with a sweeping finish past the excellent Jaaskelainen. Newcastle again slumped 2-1 at home to Blackburn and now look to be in freefall. Blackburn's first was a fortuitous offside header from Samba, but there was nothing dodgy about Santa Cruz's finish that left Rovers 2-0 up at the break. A late consolation for Owen, for the second week running, could do nothing to dispell the gloom and doom at the Toon. This big club seems destined to run aground in calamitous style again. Finally, Chelsea negotiated a potentially difficult away day to Stoke and gained another three points courtesy of goals from Bonsigwa & Anelka. Stoke's main attacking option (Rory Delap) was again sidelined, and no doubt John Terry and Alex at the heart of the Chelsea defence were more than a little grateful. Stoke had better get Delap back soon, or they might not score again.
