Memories of Tony Brown

I remember the Sheff Wed goal and I agree with Bomber that it was his best. He was "bombing" down the middle and the ball came over his shoulder and he hit it on the volley. A screamer that I am sure never got more than 2 feet off the ground. Robbie Keane eat your heart out!
I was on the Brummie Road when we played West Ham in the second leg of the league cup. One seething mass of humanity overjoyed at what we were watching. Then at Wembley to watch us lose to QPR, missed 1968 at Wembley but was there to see us lose to Man City.
I got into the semi-final at Villa Park by giving the bloke on the turnstile a ten shilling note (50 pence to you young 'uns). Sitting with Eric Clapton below the Rainbow Stand watching Bomber strutting his stuff.
Seeing the lads lose to Ipswich at Arsenal with John Wile covered in blood. To Oldham, along with 10/12000 other baggie boys, parking on the football pitches close to the ground. One car went on followed by 100's more. Nobody played on those pitches that day. Standing next to some Oldham supporters who said they had never seen so many travelling supporters. Bomber, you beauty!!
Great memories.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading your splendidly worded profile. Sadly, in the current era where money talks rather than loyalty, we are unlikely to see his type again.
For a midfielder his strike rate was phenomenal, and he had a tremendous engine - breaking up an attack on the edge of the Albion box, then moments later he would be arriving in the opposition box to rifle home a shot. Had he played for a more prestigious club then I am sure that he would have earned far more caps for England.
Favourite goals ....for me it's the trademark 25 yarder that gained us promotion from the old Division 2 at Oldham. I also well remember the swerving 30 - 35 yarder at St.Andrews which gained us a 1 - 0 win over Blues the first season after gaining promotion. I also relished his diving header when we beat Villa 3-1 at Villa Park on Boxing Day in Div 2. Finally a classic volley in the EUFA Cup match against Valencia following a superb team move.
I would be interested to know which goals of his other West Brom fans rate as their favourites.

IN AN ERA WHERE PLAYERS PLAYED FOR THE CLUB, THE FANS AND NOT THE MONEY BOMBER BROWN ALONG WITH THE KING, JEFF ASTLE, WERE THE DEADLIEST PARTNERSHIP IN THE OLD FIRST DIVISION. I HAVE TOO MANY MEMORIES TO MENTION ALL OF THEM, ONLY TO SAY BOMBER PLAYED FROM THE HEART. HE WILL ALWAYS BE A LEGEND IN MY ESTEEM.
