Memories Of Tommy Tynan

I can still see Tommy running over to the Lincoln City bench after he scored for the County at Somerton Park. Their Manager didn't look too pleased though.

Tommy was undoubtedly the best player ever to wear an Argyle shirt while i watched the Greens play from the age of ten. I was priviliged to watch the Mariner and Rafferty partnership power us to promotion in the seventies before Mariner went on to greater things with Ipswich et al but for sheer raw natural talent and an ability to score from any area of the pitch with foot and head Tynan has to be the best pound for pound striker i have ever seen. You just knew that every time he got the ball in the opponents half he could produce a goal out of nothing.
His goals in the four nil hammering of Bristol City at Home Park in 1986 to earn us promotion to the old second division was the stuff of legend. p.s the official attendance that night i believe was 38000. I remember getting there late with my mate Gary after several pints of dutch courage and being ushered over the turnstiles after paying my three quid to avoid the counter registering what would undoubtedly have been a highly illegal attendance. The football romantic within me concludes that this was a family club enabling every loyal Argyle fan to witness the spectacle not corporate greed at the detriment of health and safety!
But i digress, Tommy was driven by an almost superhuman ability during that loan period to earn him another spell with his beloved Argyle which he ultimately achieved.
Just a final personal footnote. My mother who is now 79 often bumped into Tommy on Mutley Plain in the 1980s and always collared him for a chat knowing that myself and my late brother Steve idolised him and he always took the time to acknowledge her and stop for a quick chat when i'm sure he'd heard it all before.
Tommy Tynan gentleman and footballer supreme. Sorry for the ramble guys it must be my age.

Most memorable moment of Tommy's career must be scoring twice for Newport at Carl Zeiss Jena in ECWC. Newport were unlucky in the home leg, they lost 1 - 0. Tommy is definitely a Newport County legend along with John Aldridge. And present Newport fans still talk about both players today.

i'm a west brom fan and witnessed first hand the destuctive scoring power of this legend of the game. he always scored against the albion for argyle, in fact he was a thorn in our side as argyle were our bogy team for years. at newport he was a star scoring goals for fun. what a player, what a star, what a legend. its clear that we will never see the likes of again.
