Memories of Bill Green

A towering defender who I saw score the club's first goal in Div 1 at Chelsea. His style reminded me of my own - an out and out stopper although my own playing days were limited to grammar school, youth club (St. Mary's, Cleator Moor and Hounslow Teachers teams! I would love to hear from anyone who played in any of those teams.
Bill, you were one of the all time greats at carlisle and chesterfield. I am still an avid carlisle fan.

The section relating to his West Ham career is rather unfair as Bill suffered a lot with injuries during his spell at West Ham.
I was a regular watcher of The Hammers at that time and I always felt that he was a better, more solid alternative to Tommy Taylor and that we looked less vulnerable with him in the side.
A solid honest pro, Bill always gave 100% in every game he played and many of us appreciated his contribution to the Claret & Blue cause.

I remember Green playing for Carlisle against Sunderland in the early 70s at Roker Park. The then Sunderland centre half Dave Watson (later of Man City, Southampton, Werder Bremen? and England fame) was winning everything in the air when coming upfield for corners. In desperation Green resorted to pulling down Watsons shorts just before a corner was taken! Watson stopped his run to pull them up and the corner was headed clear.
I've yet to meet anyone except my brother who noticed the incident.
