Man Utd Achievements: 2005-06 Season
2nd in the Premier League
League Cup: Winners, Wigan Athletic 4-0
FA Cup: 5th Round, Liverpool a. 0-1
Champions League: Group Stage
Manchester United Season's Highlight:
Drubbing Wigan in the League Cup final 26/2/06
MUFC Season Low Spot:
Abject defeat at Liverpool in the FA Cup
Good:
Wayne Rooney
Rooney is not alone as being a talented footballer at Old Trafford but not enough of his colleagues share his absolute will to win.
He was consistently brilliant and considered no cause lost, even when it was. This young man needs some worthy back up at MUFC quickly.
Wes Brown
Brown was United's best defender during an unsteady campaign although his manager apparently remains unconvinced.
The Orange Man needs to start playing regular 1st team football somewhere soon or his career will be in danger of being largely wasted.
Bad Points: Manchester United's 2005/6 season
Mikael Silvestre
The Frenchman was unconvincing yet again and with Heinze back from injury and a couple of new signings already in place in his positions his future looks uncertain.
Silvestre is simply not that good a defender. Pace can only get you out of a certain amount of trouble.
Alan Smith
The game Smith got plenty of plaudits for his efforts to fill the void in the United midfield but if the club wants to consider itself a contender for the major honours then this ploy can only be viewed as embarrassing.
Robson, Ince, Keane, Smith. It just doesn't follow does it? Average centre forwards don't usually make world class midfield players and Smith is no exception.
Hopefully he will make a complete recovery from his awful leg injury but then it will surely be best for all concerned if he moves on.
MUFC 2005-6 Season In Brief:
Does winning the League Cup now constitute a satisfactory season for Man United? Probably not but although the club finished 2nd behind Chelsea there was little consolation in that as they were never really credible contenders after dropping 7 points from 3 games early on.
The manic effort and tumultuous rejoicing that went into a scruffy 1-0 win at home to Chelsea only seemed to confirm that United are no longer the dominant force in English football and their European campaign was a barren, turgid affair.
The meek surrender at Liverpool in the FA Cup was particularly galling and there are undoubtedly more questions than answers at Old Trafford at the moment.
Keane finally exitted, Scholes and Giggs cannot carry on forever yet nobody emerged as a stalwart of the future during this campaign.
Next season that needs to be remedied.
