Fifa World Cup 2006 soccer match reports at Football England Korean Republic v Switzerland - World Cup 2006 match 46
23 June: Hanover - Att: 43,000

Korean republic national football team world cup squad Korean Republic 0 Switzerland national football team Switzerland 2

Korea: WJ Lee, YP Lee (JH Ahn 62), JC Choi, JK Kim, DJ Kim, H Lee, NI Kim, JS Park, CY Park (KH Seol 65), CS Lee, JJ Cho.

Switzerland: P.Zuberbuhler, P.Senderos (J.Djourou 53), P.Degen, P.Muller, C.Spycher, R.Wicky (V.Behrami 88), J.Vogel, H.Yakin (X.Margairaz 70), R.Cabanas, T.Barnetta, A.Frei.

Match Report: There was a bright start to this game as both sides looked to book their passage to the next round.

CS Lee broke away down the left to centre and JS Park was only a fraction away from converting then Yakin was stopped by weight of numbers as he threatened to break clear at the other end.

Play continued to go from end to end with WJ Lee just beating Frei to a through ball and JS Park bringing a solid save out of Zuberbuhler. Finally JC Choi needed to make a sharp block to deny Barnetta.

Play eventually settled down and just as it appeared to be beginning to drift Switzerland took the lead. Yakin sent over a free kick from the right which Senderos came storming through to head home.

The Arsenal defender ran off with blood running down his nose after tupping a defender, who also needed treatment in the act of scoring. It was shades of John Wile and Brian Talbot without same amout of blood.

Frei had a clear chance to extend the lead soon afterwards when fed by Yakin but he lifted his shot carelessly over the bar.

Korea tried to respond and JS Park headed over from DJ Kim's centre and the same player put over another dangerous cross which the Swiss struggled to clear even though the Koreans did not look that keen on challenging for it.

CS Lee was causing several problems and sent in a strong shot that brought a good save from Zuberbuhler. The keeper then proceded to drop the resulting corner but was spared when JK Kim hoofed the loose ball over the bar.

The keeper was not affected by the mistake and quickly made a fine stop from CS Lee's powerful drive.

Yakin had tested WJ Lee with a free kick during this spell of Korean pressure and the half ended with the Swiss having a great chance to put the game to bed. Frei headed wide when left unchallenged from a corner, however.

Half Time: Korean Republic 0 Switzerland 1

Korea started the second half in determined mood as they sought to prolong their World Cup.

H Lee sent a volley wide from the edge of the box and they would have been encouraged to see Senderos leave the field with a painful looking arm/shoulder injury.

There was a shout for handball against Muller but this was ignored and Switzerland began to weather the storm and look the more likely scorers on the break.

Frei produced another ghastly finish when put clean through and then saw a good effort rebound to safety from the post.

JJ Cho had a header tipped over but again it was Frei who found himself with a better chance. This time his lack of control let him down.

Frei finally managed to find the net when he was again sent clear of the defence. The Korean defence stopped as the linesman's flag went up but the official then had a change of mind and put it down again.

Frei sidestepped the keeper before rolling home.

The Koreans weren't happy but at least they now know how the rest of the world felt four years ago when every decision going went their way.

They kept going to the end but could gain no reward for their efforts. JK Kim saw his shot clip the bar and JH Ahn had a low shot saved but with France winning in the other game they were only seeking consolation anyway.

Referee: H.Elizondo (Argentina) 4
How did this game produce so many yellow cards?

Good:
Congratulations to Zuberbuhler and his defence, the only one not to concede a goal in the first round.

Bad:
If FIFA are so keen to avoid unnecessary stoppages why don't they get the refs to calm down on the yellow cards?

Ugly:
Probably not allowed to comment on the Koreans as it might be perceived as racist.
