Group 5 World Cup Qualifier. Thursday October 27, 2005.

Hungary 0 England 13

England: R.Brown (S.Chamberlain 72), C.Stoney, R.Unitt, K.Chapman, L.Johnson, M.Phillip, A.Scott, F.Williams, E.Aluko (J.Handley 63), K.Smith, R.Yankey (J.Potter 40).

There was basically nothing to report about this World Cup qualifier, other than England's thirteen goals of course.

This astonishing performance gave England's women their biggest ever win, on two previous occassions they had scored ten, and also kept them on maximum points after two games.

Manager Hope Powell was without her captain, Faye White, and striker Amanda Barr because of injury so Everton's Lindsay Johnson and Charlton's Eniola Aluko stepped in.

Powell also made a tactical switch moving Alex Scott forward onto the right hand side of midfield in place of winger Karen Carney with Casey Stoney slotting in at right back.

This gave the team a nice balance and a very solid looking right flank. In the event, however, Scott would spend her afternoon storming forward without a care in the world.

Within five minutes England were two goals ahead and the game already looked as good as over.

Kelly Smith got the first, bursting through to score from the rebound after Hungary's keeper, Melinda Szvorda, had saved her first effort. It was the start of a torrid afternoon for Szvorda.

Rachel Yankey helped herself to the second after another shot by Smith had been charged down.

Kelly Smith, such a wonderful combination of finesse and raw power, was already looking far too strong for the Hungarians, causing havoc whenever she gained possession.

Next on the scoresheet was Aluko, the in form Charlton striker sliding home from close range after a wicked right wing centre from Scott.

Just past the quarter hour mark it was Scott's turn to fire home after Aluko's shot had been blocked on the line.

Even at this early stage the Hungarians could do little except pile bodies behind the ball and try to hold back the waves of England attacks.

For a while they now held out before Katie Chapman made it 5-0 on the half hour mark.

It was the longest England had had to wait for a goal this far but it was certainly worth it.

Rachel Unitt sent over a cross following a powerful surge down the left and Chapman did not hesitate, smacking home a first time volley from twenty yards.

By half time England had taken their tally to seven after further goals by Scott and Smith.

Scott's was a classy finish after more good work by Yankey, Smith's a precise, curled effort into the far corner of the aching Hungarian net.

Half Time: Hungary 0 England 7

The rout continued five minutes into the second half with Aluko converting Casey Stoney's centre but then there was a lull in the scoring with only one more goal coming in the next twenty five minutes.

This came from Fara Williams, heading home from Jo Potter's corner. Although not in the most trying of situations the goal neatly demonstrated the range of Williams' influence, having spent the rest of the afternoon knitting together most of England's attacking play.

The demoralised home side might have begun to hope that the visitors were content with their lot but they would be shown no such compassion.

England were still strong and as the Hungarians began to tire in the last quarter of an hour they were put to the sword.

Jo Potter was on hand to net England's tenth on seventy six minutes and three minutes later she assisted with the goal that broke England's goal record, sending in a stinging drive that the keeper could only parry, substitute Jody Handley supplying the finish.

Kelly Smith then helped herself to her hat trick before Fara Williams brought the scoring to a close with a penalty two minutes from time.

Hungary 0 England 13! What an afternoon.

Great credit goes to England's women for this result and performance. Although clearly superior to the Hungarians a victory of this margin could not have been foretold and gave clear indication of the skill, teamwork and total application shown throughout by the girls.

Hope Powell must have been delighted, particularly as she explained after the game that the squad had "worked on going for early goals."

That was one instruction that had certainly been followed. Powell obviously hadn't told them when to stop either.
