Lianne Sanderson
Chelsea Ladies
squad no. 17
caps 21
goals 5
There have been suggestions in recent England games that Sanderson might be ready to fulfil her huge potential on the international stage. It would provide a massive boost to their prospects if she did so in Finland. Strong and clever she is also well capable of finding the net.
Will probably compete with Aluko for the lone strikers’ role although it would be nice to see them given the opportunity to play up front together. Wishful thinking I fear.
Italy: 1-2
Came on for the closing minutes and showed a couple of good touches without having a chance inside the box.
Russia: 3-2
Not called into action in this one even though Aluko looked to be struggling with a strain during the second half.
Sweden: 1-1
Was surely baffled, and disappointed, that Emily Westwood was called upon to replace Eni Aluko.
Finland: 3-2
Not required again and has now seen Aluko cement her place up front with an inspired display. Might still have a role to play as Aluko seems to be one of several England players carrying injuries, however.
Holland: 2-1
5 out of 10
Came on for Aluko midway through the second half and had an eventful time. Her control and link play was fairly good until she was switched with Kelly Smith and moved into a wider position where she looked less effective.
Her performance will always be remembered for her astonishing extra time miss when she hit the bar from five yards out, however, and she may suffer nightmares about it even though England went on to win.
Germany: 2-6
Came on for the last ten minutes in place of Aluko with the game already lost and tried hard to make an impact without being able to.
