Karen Carney
Chicago Red Stars
squad no. 7
caps 48
goals 7
Carney has established herself as one of England’s most dangerous players and her abilities are recognised throughout the world. Four years ago she burst onto the international scene as little more than a girl in the last European Championships, two years ago she was still a budding talent in the World Cup finals. Now is the time England need her to truly announce her arrival as a world class talent.
Italy: 1-2
6 out of 10
Nowhere near her best although Carney did win England's penalty and was a growing influence in the later stages.
England need more from this talented player in the forthcoming games, however.
Russia: 3-2
8 out of 10
After a quiet beginning Carney exploded into life and took centre stage in England's remarkable fightback from 2-0 down.
Scored the first with an excellent finish and put Aluko's goal on a plate after a telling dribble.
Outstanding.
Sweden: 1-1
6 out of 10
Found it tough against a quality opponent but managed to create England's goal and was still trying to force the pace in the closing minutes.
Finland: 3-2
7 out of 10
This performance was spoiled by a lack of end product but she was at the heart of some lovely England passing moves on the counter attack and is developing into a player who remains indispensable even when below her best.
Holland: 2-1
8 out of 10
Unbelievably left out of the starting line up, Carney came on at half time to perk up a previously lifeless performance. Sparked England into the spell of pressure that brought their first goal and terrorised a tiring defence at the end of normal time and through the extra half hour.
Her corners caused havoc and eventually led to England's winning goal.
Surely she must start in the final.
Germany: 2-6
7 out of 10
This was a gruelling test for Carney who came in for plenty of punishment from the highly physical Germans but she never shirked the challenge and had a hand in both goals, scoring one and providing the pass for the other.
