Jessica Clarke
Leeds United Ladies
squad no. 21
caps 3
goals 1
Lively young winger who was preferred in the squad to Rachel Yankey and may well get the opportunity to make an impact during the tournament. It will be a big step up for Clarke if she is thrust into the action and her ability to handle it could have a huge bearing on how England do.
Italy: 1-2
England's wingers struggled to make an impact but Clarke did not receive the call to show what she can do, watching Kelly Smith and Lianne Sanderson sent on instead.
Russia: 3-2
5 out of 10
Came on for the insipid Sue Smith and was an improvement without suggesting that she was the answer in that position.
Blew one great chance to score and looked higher on energy than quality.
Sweden: 1-1
Sent on to kill a few seconds in injury time.
Finland: 3-2
Not called upon on this occasion.
Holland: 2-1
6 out of 10
It wasn't a total surprise that Clarke was pitched into this semi final, just amazing that it was Karen Carney making way and not Sue Smith.
Clarke struggled to make real headway against a resolute defence but stuck at her task well and was involved in the opening goal. Also worked hard for the team and made one important defensive contribution which helped get Casey Stoney out of trouble.
Deserved to stay on when Carney was introduced at half time before eventually making way for Jill Scott at the end of ninety minutes.
Germany: 2-6
After starting in the semi final and doing pretty well Clarke will have been disappointed to miss out altogether in the final.
