Faye White
Arsenal Ladies
squad no. 14
caps 64
goals 6
White’s inclusion in the squad is slightly surprising given how little football she has played in the last couple of years. In the past she has been a true England stalwart but it would appear to be a gamble to call on her now. One thing’s for sure, though, if she is required she will it everything she has.
Italy: 1-2
7 out of 10
White was a very surprising selection given her lack of football in recent times but she could not be faulted at the heart of the England defence. Put in several crunching challenges and lasted the pace pretty well considering.
She certainly looked in great shape after her lengthy injury problems and looks to have kept away from the chocolates.
Russia: 3-2
5 out of 10
Formed a highly uneasy partnership with Lindsay Johnson, possibly too similar, and mixed some crucial last ditch challenges with several moments of disturbing indecision.
Was possibly at fault for the opening goal and should have tracked her runner better for the second.
Sweden: 1-1
8 out of 10
Scored England's goal, almost scored again late on and was more dominant defensively than in the the first two games. A reassuring display.
Finland: 3-2
8 out of 10
White had been at her commanding best for thirty five minutes, meeting Finland's aerial assault head on, before being forced off after taking a terrible blow to the cheek.
England missed her badly when coming under intense pressure from corner kicks later on and will be hoping she is fit to resume in the semi finals.
Holland: 2-1
Would have been gutted to miss this one because of her cheek injury but the partnership of Johnson and Asante was well suited to deal with the pacy Dutch attack. A fully fit White would probably be preferred for the more physical challenge that now awaits in the final.
Germany: 2-6
6 out of 10
Wasn't noticably affected by the face mask she was wearing to protect her damaged cheek but White wasn't able to provide the dominant figure England needed at the centre of their defence.
White didn't play badly but was usually at full stretch in her efforts to keep the German attack in check.
