England World Cup Squad Germany 2006

England World cup squad - Germany 2006 at Football England The England World Cup squad has been picked. Svennis has decided who's going and who is staying at home. There are some unexpected decisions, and some we were kind of hoping he wouldn't make too. Here's the Football England overview of the players in the squad.

England's World Cup Squad - Germany 2006
England World Cup Squad - Goalkeepers:
Paul Robinson
Has been solid and dependable for England and is definitely our number 1. Has improved over the season after looking a little fallible and indecisive at times for Spurs, and is going to the World Cup at the top of his game. Must stay fit because the other two 'keepers do not inspire confidence.

David James
We all know about Calamity. Lets just hope we don't need David to turn out, unless it's as a makeshift centre forward. Good job Pearce didn't get the job.

Scott Carson
A dozen or so games helping keep Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship and its' off to Germany for Liverpool's fourth choice keeper. Strange sort of world, isn't it?

England World Cup Squad - Defenders:
Gary Neville
Has always been dependable for England, and will be solid in defence. He will start in all the matches he's fit for. Experienced campaigner who knows his limits.

Ashley Cole
It's good to see Ashley back to fitness in good time to make the England World cup squad. He's a class act and his attacking left sided play is very important to our chances. His pace is a definite asset.

Wayne Bridge
Surprised to see his inclusion in England's squad because he's hardly had any football of late. Can only be going as a deputy for Cole. Should not be needed all being well.

Rio Ferdinand
Rio has the chance to prove to us that he is world class. He also has the chance to cock up big time, and cost us games. Has got pace and ability, but you just wonder if mentally he's away with the fairies. Will start in central defence.

John Terry
Will start alongside Rio and must step up to the plate as our leader. He must organise and boss the defence, because Rio certainly won't. We want to see you opening your mouth John. Minor concerns with Terry are his lack of pace, and his robust style - don't get sent off John, the ref's don't allow you to tackle like you do in the Premier League.

Sol Campbell
We've no worries with Sol, even though he's gone mental. Even if he starts ahead of Terry or Ferdinand (which is unlikely)he will be dependable. Must be preferred to Carragher, should injuries or suspensions occur.

Jamie Carragher
Must only play if absolutely necessary, due to injuries e.t.c. Is an average performer in several different positions and is in the squad as cover. Forget that crap about him being a holding midfielder.

England World Cup Squad - Midfielders:
David Beckham
The captain of England's World cup team must provide his best in this tournament. We know you can still cut it Becks, and if you perform to your ability you will raise the whole team.

Michael Carrick
It's difficult to see Carrick starting, but given the predicament with our strikers, a five man midfield looks a distinct possibility. Carrick will be a big success if he is used. Can orchestrate proceedings from deep midfield.

Frank Lampard
Just shoot Frank, at every opportunity.

Steven Gerrard
World's best midfielder? Stevie G can win us the World Cup, but not if Sven doesn't get him forward. Needs to be involved in everything. Carrick in the side would definitely release him forward.

Jermaine Jenas
We can't understand why you're going Jermaine, you're a lucky boy. Not a bad un, but we can't see where he fits into the plan, as all the other midfielders bar one command their places.

Owen Hargreaves
It will be best for us all if you do not set foot on the pitch in Germany. Eriksson is a fool for including you in the England World cup squad. An absolute waste of a squad place.

Joe Cole
Most improved english player this season, and his skill and trickery can defeat any side. A possible star if allowed free to express himself. Make the most of him Sven.

Stewart Downing
Good to see Downing in the squad, as without him we are lacking in width. May be an unlikely starter if the 4-5-1 formation is employed, and should provide for the front player(s).

Aaron Lennon
Ditto the above, Lennon may be an efffective bench man if used late on to attack down the right.

England World Cup Squad - Forwards:
Wayne Rooney
England's best player, and possibly the World's. Just heartbreaking that he's not going to be ready. We're all hoping, but realistically we have to plan to be without him, which makes Sven's decision to take just 4 strikers all the more puzzling.

Michael Owen
Now England's biggest hope, and looks to be getting sharper. Owen should start up front alone with 5 midfielders providing support, & we'd be happy with that if he's 100%. Unfortunately the robot freak has edged into Sven's thinking.

Peter Crouch
Oh my god. There's a distinct possibility that Crouch will start as our main striker. If that happens, we're just going to look foolish.

Theo Walcott
What we've seen of him looks encouraging, and we don't mind him making the trip. Could be useful off the bench in late bursts as Owen used to be.

Reserves - on standby
Surely nothing else can go wrong with the England World Cup squad? But if it does, Sven in his wisdom has got the following bods on standby:
Phil Neville (MF), Andy Johnson (F) & Jermain Defoe (F).

Why, oh why isn't Jermaine Defoe going? He probably will get the nod if Rooney doesn't make it, but he should be there in his own right. There was room for at least one, maybe two more strikers in the England World cup squad. A massive mistake Sven.
