Crash down or fly high (SAFC v Hull)
by SAFCSocial
(Sunderland)
For the first time our Quinn propelled magic carpet ride looks like it is on route course for a crash landing, but the home game against Hull on Saturday could be the launch pad we so desperately need to save our season.
Following the massive euphoria around Sunderland that has come from the championship promotion charge, surviving in the premier league and signing some real quality players it would be a huge disappointment if the resources Quinn, Short and Drumville and the belief of the supports have put into the club comes to an end this season in the form of relegation.
The term ‘six pointer’ is banded around all the time in football but this game in the true meaning of that phrase. A win on Saturday will put us above Hull and will ensure we go into next week’s away game against West Brom with enough confidence to get the points we need. A loss will see Hull pull clear from us, put huge pressure on Quinn to replace Ricky and will make that uncomfortable gap of just two points between us and the relegation zone (and our north east rivals) even smaller.
This is such a pivotal point in Sunderland future, if we can stay up we have the backing of Ellis Short to secure more quality signing and push up further up the league. If we go down will all the recent excitement and confidence in Niall Quinn’s vision be lost? It’s hard to see how that wouldn’t be the case.
Seven points should be enough to secure us top flight football next season. Hull, Boro and Newcastle all have difficult fixtures remaining this season so it is difficult to suggest they will achieve more than 39 points and we have superior goal difference to all three as an insurance policy. A win this Saturday against Hull will put us well on our way to achieving the needed points; anything else will put us in serious trouble.
