THOSE HERO'S OF 66 IN SOUTH AFRICA
by: Anonymous

Staying with the topic, it's quite amazing that eight of the 1966 WC winning squad played football in SA.
Goalkeeper Gordon Banks played as a guest player for Hellenic in the 1971 season.
Centre-half Jack Charlton was here in 1975, doing coaching sessions at Highlands Park, and again in 1979, when he played for the Bobby Charlton XI. Let me digress for a moment, to look at that tour. The Bobby Charlton's All Stars squad was as follows: Ron Springett, Ron Yeats, Roger Hunt, Geoff Strong, Ron Wilson, Ian Storey-Moore, Bobby Charlton himself, and brother Jack, Dave Sadler, Bobby Moore, Arfon Griffiths, Terry Paine, Keith Newton, Chris Lawler, Raymond Treacy and Eoin Hand.
Their tour itinery was:
6 July - beat Transvaal XI 1-0 in Joburg (18,000 att), Charlton (Bob) getting the only goal.
8 July - lost to Natal XI 0-1 in Durban.
14 July - lost to South African XI 0-2 at the Rand Stadium in Joburg (8,000 att) and
15 July - lost to Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 at the Orlando Stadium in Joburg (40,000 att).
Some comments from the squad (from "Soccer through the Years, 1862-2002, the first official histroy of South African Soccer" by Peter Raath):
Storey-Moore (after the Chiefs game) - "They lacked dicipline and played to the crowd. They managed only two goals against ateam whose average age is 38 and-a-half, and who had played a hard game against the national tean the day before. In our prime we would have thrashed them 10 or 15-nil!"
After the game against the SA XI, Jack Charlton remarked to The Citizen - "If our chaps had been the same age, on average, we would have buried you alive. This was pretty fair English fourth division stuff today."
Terry Paine - "Your chaps have no idea of how to penetrate a defence, and they shirk responsibility by passing the buck - the ball - to someone else." Sadly, the standard of football in SA, although an improvement on then, is still not great.
Anyway, back to those hero's of 66! Half-back Nobby Stiles didn't play here in SA but skipper Bobby Moore graced these shores. He was here in 1970, doing coaching clinics, played for Hellenic in 1974 and again, as a guest player, in 1975, and, of course, was here in that same aforementioned Charlton's All Stars in 1979.
Alan Ball played for Hellenic too, in 1976, Geoff Hurst for Cape Town City as a guest in 1973, also playing for the Malcolm Allison All Stars the same year (that's another story), having coached here in 1970; Roger Hunt guested for Hellenic in 1971 and returned, eight years later, with Charlton's All Stars. Bobby Charlton, besides the All Stars tour, played for Arcadia Pepsi in 1976.
George Eastham is the other one, playing for Cape Town City in 1970 and Hellenic from 1971-74. Terry Paine, after the Charlton All Star tour, came back in 85 and is still here, very involved in the local football scene.

Kevin Keegan in South Africa
by: Neil

Kevin Keegan, then England captain, played as a guest player for Cape Town City in 1978, along with other top UK pro's, Mick Channon and John Sissons. Channon was also a guest player but Sissons had been with City since 73. Frank Lord, who enjoyed huge success as manager of Cape Town City from 1969 to 1973, and again from 1976 until their demise in 1979, winning the BP League Championship in 76.

CAPE FOOTBALL MEMORIES OF ENGLISH PLAYERS
by: Neil

In keeping with the UK / SA link, i'll be attending a get together of about a hundred ex-National Football League (NFL) players this coming Saturday evening, among whom are mainly English players, including George Eastham.

Two of the ex-Cape Town City players, Gary France and Tommy Claxton (both signed from Bury) have agreed to a radio interview, to chat about their years of playing football in SA.

I am an internet radio host on www.springbokradio.com and will be recording the interview for the station, probably early next week. i hope to make a series of this, and will request interviews from other attendees at Saturday night's bash.

It may be interesting to UK residents to hear the comments and memories of those halcyon days of football in the Cape, from the players themselves.
Gary France played for CT City 1969 to 1979, in that time winning two BP League Championship titles, three Castle Cup triumphs (like the UK's FA Cup), two UTC Bowls (like a Top 8 Knock Out competition)and two Champions of Champions Trophies (like the UK's Community Shield), also winning the Foreign Footballer of the Year award in 1969. He went on to become Player/Manager of amateur club Bellville City and to manage other amateur teams, Wynberg and Vasco Da Gama. In that 69 season, he had ended as leading goalscorer with 34 goals.

Claxton was a brilliant winger who played for the
City from 1969 to 1972, picking up two Castle Cup medals, one Bowl title and a Champions of Champions medal.

I'd also like to get an interview with George Eastham, who had a hugely successful career here in SA, playing for Cape Town City as a 'guest' in 1970, winning a Castle Cup medal with France and Claxton, and then as a 35 year old Player/Manager for the other Cape club, City's biggest rivals, Hellenic, less than 10 kms down the drag from City's Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory (capacity 30,000), in Green Point at the Green Point Stadium (40,000).

With Hellenic, he guided them to the League Championship, the Coca Cola Shield (like the Carling Cup) and the Bowl, all in 1971, leading to him being named the Sunday Express Footballer of the Year. From 73 - 74, he was Assistant Manager under his father, also George, winning a Shield and a Champion of Champions.

In 1975, he moved to East London United as Manager and in 78 to Dynamos, a Durban club, ending his managerial career in SA in 1980 with Moroka Swallows.

Once the interviews have been recorded and i'm aware exactly when they'll be aired, i'll post the details as to the time of the shows and which players are to be featured in each show.

But for now, France and Claxton will be the first show - maybe some readers would be interested in their recollections of days in Cape Town when crowds of 30,000 - 40,000 were not uncommon in the Mother City.

Keep you posted!
