Despite having more than their fair share of possession and several excellent scoring opportunities Ghana ended up heavily defeated as their defensive discipline was again found wanting on the biggest of stages.
Canada, desperate for a victory after losing to Australia, got the goal they wanted after a quarter of an hour. Kara Lang did well down the right and dug out an excellent cross to the far post from tight to the corner flag.
Christine Sinclair sent in a looping header that Memunatu Sulemana got fingertips to but could not keep from creeping underneath the bar, Katie Thorlakson following in to make absolutely sure although the goal was definitely Sinclair's.
Both sides wasted chances to score before half time with the most glaring miss come right on the stroke of the interval.
Adjoa Bayor did well for Ghana in the build up and when the ball came loose inside the Canadian penalty area Anita Amankwa was left with a gaping goal from within the six yard box but could only slam her effort against the bar.
Ghana tried to push players forward after the break but this just left them wide open to the counter attack and Canada duly punished them.
With barely a defender in sight Sulemana touched over a drive from Lang but Ghana would not survive the corner. Sinclair headed goalwards only for Aminatu Ibrahim to head off the line but when Sophie Schmidt then lunged forward to head for goal Hamdya Abass could only help the ball into her own net via the underside of the bar.
Minutes later the lively Lang rounded Sulemana before teeing up Sinclair to slot home at the far post and the game was over as a contest.
Another corner by Kristina Kiss proved too much for Sulemana and her feeble attempt at a catch was punished by Martina Franco from a couple of yards out.
Canada might have had a fifth when Jodie-Ann Robinson slipped a neat ball through for Sinclair but she was a couple of yards away from her hat trick as her cross shot flashed by the far post.
Comfortable for Canada who now need to beat Norway in their final game to progress while Ghana now have nothing to play for but pride.
