Review

If you wanted to know what was going to happen in this group all you had to do was ask the bookies; Germany 1st, England 2nd, Japan 3rd, Argentina 15th.
After Germany had slaughtered Argentina in the first game, however, the group became an interesting one.
The crucial England/Japan game see-sawed backwards and forwards before ending a 2-2 draw after a last minute Japan equaliser, England then held the mighty Germans to a goalless draw and Argentina almost held Japan until another last minute effort broke their hearts.
The final places then rested on the final games but there would be no surprises, Germany comfortably beating Japan and England thrashing Argentina to qualify.
Star players in the group were England's Kelly Smith and from the strong German outfit I would select Sandra Smisek, despite being mangled by Anita Asante in the England game, and Kerstin Garefrekes.
Bergit Prinz obviously stole the headlines after breaking the record for most goals in the World Cup finals and hats off to the Fraulein.
Most disappointing was Japan's supposed star Homare Sawa, who did practically nothing, and Argentina of course.
