Alex Scott

Alex Scott at Football England Alex Scott - England Full Back - World Cup 2007
squad no. 2

club: Arsenal
position: Right Back
age: 22
caps: 29
goals: 6

USA 0-3: Football England Rating 5

It's asking a lot for a full back to play up front against the best teams in the world and this was a game too far for Alex in her more advanced role.
Gave it everything but could make no impression against the American defence.
England would have been far better balanced with Scott employed at right back.

Argentina 6-1: Football England Rating 6

Whole hearted in everything she does but Scott is more effective attacking from right back than further up the pitch.
Made several promising breaks down the right but her final ball was lacking.
Got booked early on and was taken off, probably as a precaution, early in the second half.

Germany 0-0: Football England Rating 7

The versatile Scott was played as one of the three attackers in this game and played her part in a tremendous team performance.
Made a few promising breaks in the first half and was not far away with a lobbed attempt from 25 yards.
After the break she was more prominent helping out her defence. Her bravery and stamina cannot be questioned having come into this game as a fitness doubt.
I hope Scott is reinstated at full back during the rest of this tournament as that is her most natural position and she is capable of setting England on the attack from the back unlike the totally defensive Mary Phillip.

Japan 2-2: Football England Rating 8

Scott did her job defensively and was excellent pushing forward, especially in the second half when instigating several dangerous England attacks.
Was forced off in the dying moments after another burst forward and we must hope this was only cramp rather than a pull.

Assessment:

Scott enjoyed a fantastic season in 2006-07 and emerged as a vital player for both club and country as Arsenal swept clean and England qualified and then prepared for this tournament.

Quick and aggressive in her defensive duties Scott loves to get forward and does so to effect, scoring several vital goals last term.

Can operate further down the right flank and gives Hope Powell good options.
