Aston Villa FC : 2005-06 Season
16th in the Premier League
League Cup: 4th round, Doncaster Rovers a. 0-3
FA Cup: 5th round replay, Manchester City a. 1-2
Highlight:
3-1 win at home to Birmigham City 16/4/06
Low Spot:
0-3 defeat at Doncaster in the League Cup 29/11/05
Good:
Gareth Barry
Barry continues to provide consistent quality down the left hand side for Villa, turning in performances no matter how ugly things are getting in general.
Steven Davis
Started the season in fine style and although he faded in the second half of the season he looks to be one of the players who Villa can build on for a brighter future.
Honest and hard working, Davis also has the knack of finding the net which helps when you've got Villa's forward line.
Bad:
David O'Leary
Keeps insisting things are fine at Villa Park but some more concrete evidence on the pitch would be helpful.
Lost the backing of a large percentage of fans and did himself no favours by getting involved in a petty argument with a local journalist.
His nadir was sitting impassively through the embarrassing defeat at Doncaster in the League Cup. It was a performance of studied dis-interest of which even Sven Goran Eriksson would have been proud.
Juan Pablo Angel
You could have picked names out of a hat for players who had disappointed but we chose the Colombian "striker".
Three goals in total this time, will Villa ever see a return on their considerable investment?
In Brief:
This was a depressing season at Villa Park with the gloom only lifted by the fact that Villa were still able to claim the title of top Midlands club.
A shoddy start set the tone and there was genuine embarrassment as they were not only beaten at Doncaster in the League Cup but outplayed.
This at least seemed to galvanise the club and a decent run of form culminated in a 4-0 win at Middlesbrough which lifted them to 12th.
Thereafter it was more solid drudgery and only a win over rivals Birmingham at Villa Park brightened a depressing end of season run.
Next season will be of huge importance to the club.
