Good:
Chris Shuker
This nippy, diminutive attacking midfielder posed problems for everyone he faced, scoring six times and laying on chances for others. Not as skillful but has something of Pat Nevin about him.
Chris Greenacre
Tranmere really rely on this guy for regular goals and he didn't disappoint slamming home 19 over the course of the season. Has decent ability in general play but knows what his primary job is and makes sure he gets it done.
In Brief:
Three wins from the end of September seemed to set the club up for a promotion challenge but there was little consistency thereafter. Another four wins from the end of October had them up into 2nd place but there were no wins at all in December and progress from then on was steady rather than spectacular.
Indeed the most positive thing to take from a season that had a disappointing feel to it was the fact that the club still finished 9th, Slight improvements to the playing staff and a more consistent effort from the existing squad members could see the club in the shake up next time around.
Tranmere Rovers Football Club was formed in 1884, known initially as Belmont AFC but changing their name to Tranmere Rovers the following year.
The club became original members of Division Three North in 1921 and remained there until 1938 when they won the championship in that division. The Rovers were instantly relegated by a country mile before World War II brought a halt to proceedings.
The club had very little to shout about until the appointment of John King as manger in 1987 brought about a remarkable improvement in performances.
King's first achievement was to keep Rovers in the league, a last game victory over Exeter City saving their skin, before embarking on an incredible run of success.
In 1989 Tranmere were promoted from Division Four as runners up behind Rotherham United and then made the Division Three play off final the following year only to lose out to Notts County.
That was the clubs' second visit to Wembley that season having already won the Leyland Daf Cup there, defeating Bristol Rovers 2-1 with goals from the stalwart strikeforce of Ian Muir and Jim Steel.
In 1991 it was a case of role reversal as Tranmere lost their Leyland Daf Cup crown after a 3-2 defeat to Birmingham City at Wembley but gained promotion through the play offs after beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the final.
The signing of John Aldridge from Real Sociedad proved a real master stroke and the club continued to progress.
In 1993 Tranmere finished fourth in Division One but lost out in the play off semi finals, something that would repeat itself in each of the next two seasons.
In 1994 further heartbreak came in the shape of a League Cup semi final defeat, on penalties, to Aston Villa.
Aldridge took over from King as manager in 1996 and although league performances waned Tranmere became a cup side to be feared.
Tranmere Rovers football club reached the 6th round of the FA Cup in 2000, 2001 and 2004, famously knocking Everton out 3-0 at Goodison Park before recovering from 3-0 down to beat Premiership Southampton 4-3 in the 2001 competition.
In 2000 Rovers also won through to the League Cup final before losing 2-1 to Leicester City.
This astonishing golden age ended abruptly, however, and in 2001 John Aldridge left as manager in controversial circumstances and the club were relegated.
Tranmere have remained in the third tier of English football since that relegation.
Last season saw the club make it to the play offs but they lost out on penalties to Hartlepool United in the semi finals and have made a disappointing start to the present campaign.
Tranmere Rovers score highly on the celebrity fan chart, boasting the iconic Half Man Half Biscuit frontman Nigel Blackwell as a diehard supporter.
