In Brief:
The season started brightly with a 4-1 thrashing of Bristol Rovers on the opening day and 10 points from the first 4 games. Then came 4 defeats in 5, however.
Steady progress through October and November saw the club move up to 5th in the table but a dreadful run of 1 point from 10 games ruined any promotion prospects and also cost Keith Alexander his job as manager.
In came Darren Ferguson as the Posh went for a "like father like son" approach to management selection and after a slow start results picked up markedly as the new mans' signings bedded in.
With further investment expected and several decent looking acquisitions already made next season promises a lot at London Road.
Peterborough United Football Club was formed in 1934 after the FA suspended the Peterborough & Fletton club which then disbanded in 1933.
The club entered the Midland League and were elected to the Football League in 1960 after winning five successive Midland League titles.
The Posh had also progressed to at least the third round of the FA Cup three times out of four immediately prior to being voted into the league.
If anyone doubted that Peterborough were worthy of their elevation into the Football League then they were in for a shock. In their first season as a league team Peterborough won the fourth division championship, scoring an amazing 134 goals in the process, Terry Bly banging home 52 of them.
The club stayed in the third division until 1968 when they were relegated after being docked 19 points for offering irregular bonusses to their players.
The Posh returned to Division Three in 1974 and almost won promotion to the second division in 1978, losing out to Preston North End on goal difference after drawing two and losing one of their final three games.
Surprisingly, Peterborough United Football Club were relegated the following year and spent the entire 1980's in the fourth division.
Successive promotions in 1991 and 92, the latter thanks to a 2-1 play off final victory over Stockport in which Ken Charlery scored both goals, saw Peterborough climb into England's second tier for the only time, managing to stay at that level for only two seasons, however.
Since that time the Posh have alternated between the bottom two divisions, currently occupying a place in Football League Two.
The clubs' best cup performances came in successive seasons in the mid 1960's. In 1965 Peterborough reached the 6th round of the FA Cup. They removed Arsenal, 2-1 in the 4th round, before taking a 5-1 thumping at Chelsea in the quarter finals.
The following season they won through to the semi finals of the League Cup. The Posh put out Newcastle, Charlton, Millwall and Burnley, scoring four against each of them, before losing on a 6-3 aggregate to West Bromwich Albion in the semis.
