Macclesfield Town Football Club - The Silkmen

Macclesfield Town Football Club at Football England Macclesfield Town History

2006-07 Season

22nd in League Two
League Cup: 1st round; Leicester City a. 0-2
FA Cup: 3rd round; Chelsea a. 1-6
JP Trophy: 1st round; Stockport County h. 0-1

Highlight:
3-0 win at Chester City, 26/12/06

Low Spot:
2-3 home defeat to Boston United, 18/11/06

Good:
Martin Bullock
Stocky winger who is clever on the ball and uses it astutely. Provided Macc's chief source of danger throughout a difficult season.
Kevin McIntyre
Provided the steel and energy in midfield and also managed nine goals. His will to win was vital.

In Brief:
The Silkmen had taken only 7 points from their first 19 games with no wins and were 11 points from safety. The shambolic nature of many of these performances seemed to mark relegation down as a certainty.
The club had pulled off a coup in luring Paul Ince to Moss Rose as manager, however, and his influence quickly arrested the slide.
Excellent FA Cup wins over promotion chasing Walsall and Hartlepool instilled much needed belief and confidence with league form improving as a result.
16 points came in 6 games around Christmas and the club also put in a commendable display at Chelsea in the FA Cup 3rd round before a heartless referee reduced them to ten men.
Despite another 3 wins from 4 games at the end of March the club remained in danger and three straight defeats left them hanging on by a thread going into the last game at home to Notts County.
An excrutiatingly tense 1-1 draw proved enough for survival and Incey and his players could celebrate a remarkable achievement. Ince won't be around next season, however, having moved to MK Dons so another struggle seems likely.

Macclesfield Town FC - Club History

Macclesfield Town Football Club was formed in 1874 and emerged from the rugby team operating under the same name.

It would be a long time before the club distinguished itself but from the late 1960's The Silkmen finally began to make an impression.

In 1968 the club made it to the 3rd round of the FA Cup after beating Stockport County and Spennymoor. This earned them a trip to Fulham where they went down 4-2.

The following year Macclesfield won the Northern Premier League and then achieved a notable double in 1970. Not only did the club retain the Northern Premier League but they also captured the first ever FA Trophy after beating Telford United 2-0 in the final.

The next burst of activity came in the late 1980's. The Silkmen won another Northern Premier League title in 1987 and then reached the FA Cup 3rd round in 1988. They put four goals past both Carlisle United and Rotherham before losing narrowly to Port Vale.

Macclesfield were Conference champions in 1995 but were denied entry into the Football League because of the standard of their Moss Rose Ground.

Their facilities were deemed adequate when the club again made off with the Conference title in 1997 to take their place in the Football League.

The Silkmen were promoted from Division Three at the first time of asking as runners up behind Notts County in 1998 and although they were instantly relegated from Division Two they were at least able to share the same division as Manchester City for a season.

Life back in the fourth tier has proved a struggle until last season when the club claimed a play off spot after finishing 5th. This led to a disappointing 2-1 aggregate defeat to Lincoln City, however.

The club made it to the 3rd round of the FA Cup three years running from 2002 only to lose out to West Ham United, Watford and Swansea City in turn.
