Brazil v. New Zealand
Brazil: Andreia, Simone, Tania, Renata Costa, Aline, Daniela, Ester, Formiga, Maycon (Rosana 78), Marta, Cristiane (Pretinha 84).
New Zealand: J.Bindon, R.Percival, M.Jackman, A.Erceg, R.Smith, E.Humphries (Z.Thompson 72), K.Hoyle (P.Duncan 66), H.Moorwood, E.McColl, A.Riley, W.Henderson (R.Tegg 45).
This game might have only finished 5-0 in favour of the Brazilians but it was, in truth, possibly even more one sided than the Germany/Argentina game that finished 11-0 to the Germans.
From the first whistle this was a damage limitation exercise for New Zealand who sometimes booted the ball into the Brazilian half but barely ever actually had any players in it.
In the end the shot count in this game was 27-2 in favour of Brazil whereas Germany had managed a 28-11 count against Argentina.
If New Zealand had any realistic hopes that their tactics might bring a point these were shattered on 10 minutes when Daniela scored with a well struck shot from just outside the box.
The ball flew into the centre of the New Zealand goal, however, so questions have to be asked about goalkeeper Jenny Bindon.
The Brazilians were fairly lacklustre up to half time and did not extend their advantage until early in the second when Cristiane slammed in a superb angled drive from the left hand corner of the penalty area.
After that it was a question of how many Brazil would score and the eventual answer was five.
World Player of the Year Marta finished clinically with a low angled drive, Renata Costa struck with another 25 yarder before Marta completed the scoring in stoppage time, cutting in from the right to score with a low drive back inside the near post.
Very Kelly Smith.
Daniela also had the woodwork rattling with a drive against the angle.
Too one sided to be enjoyable or to give an indication of Brazil's prospects in this tournament as a whole.
