Bury Football Club - The Shakers

Bury FC at Football England Bury Football Club History

2006-07 Season

21st in League Two
League Cup: 2nd round; Sheffield United a. 0-1
FA Cup: 2nd round; disqualified for playing ineligible player.
JP Trophy: 1st round; Tranmere Rovers h. 0-2

Highlight:
3-1 win at Rochdale, 4/11/06

Low Spot:
Getting kicked out of the FA Cup.

Good:
Glynn Hurst
The goals were flying in while Hurst was on loan and although they did dry up a bit after making his move to Gigg Lane permanent he did enough to suggest there are more to come.
Paul Scott
Predominantly a defender but can also do a job in midfield and proved himself an obdurate opponent in both positions over the course of the season.

In Brief:
The club lost their first four league games but boosted spirits with a fine League Cup victory over Sunderland which was backed up by successive wins in League Two.
The clubs' best run of form came from the end of September when there were six straight league wins but this could not be maintained and after a couple of victories in December expulsion from the FA Cup hit the club hard.
The Shakers did not manage another victory until the end of March by which stage relegation was back on the agenda but wins at Boston, Shrewsbury and Walsall ensured safety.
The club remains gripped by financial constraints although the sell on clause from David Nugent's move to the Premiership will help out this time around.
Can they make a move towards the top end of the table?

Bury Football Club was formed in 1885 after two meetings, one at the Waggon & Horses Hotel and the other at the Old White Horse Hotel.

Surely the way all football clubs should come about.

Bury were elected into Division Two of the Football League in 1894 and quickly became a side to be reckoned with.

They won promotion to the first division as champions at the first attempt and reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup the season after.

In 1900 Bury won the FA Cup after beating Southampton, then a non league side, 4-0 in the final at Crystal Palace.

Three years later the club made it through to the final again, beating Wolves, Sheffield United, Notts County and Aston Villa on a much tougher route to Crystal Palace.

This time they met Derby County in the final and again it was a rout, Bury triumphing by 6-0, a record score in a cup final.

The Shakers remained predominantly a second divison outfit until the relegation of 1969 since when they have generally alternated between the bottom two divisions.

The exception to this rule came in the mid 1990's under the management of Stan Ternant.

Having won promotion from the bottom division in 1996 Bury followed this up by winning the Division Two championship the following year, thereby regaining a place in the second tier of English football, an outstanding achievement.

Always struggling for support in the heart of Greater Manchester the Shakers have since fallen back into the fourth tier of English football and exist against a background of perpetual financial hardship.

Selling to survive has been a consistent theme at Gigg Lane and the club have unearthed plenty of nuggets down the years from Eddie Quigley, Colin Bell, Terry McDermott and Neville Southall right through to the present day with David Nugent, now at Preston North End, threatening to make a name for himself.

The cup glory days are certainly a thing of the past although Bury did reach the last four of the League Cup in 1963, losing to Birmingham City 4-3 on aggregate.
